1934 Goudey #85 Adam Comorosky

Cincinnati Reds · National League · Press sheet 4 of 4 · "Chuck Klein says" (red strip)
Klein bannerHigh number

One of the 12 "Chuck Klein says" cards (#80-91), all National Leaguers: with an American Leaguer fronting the rest of the set, Goudey gave its last dozen NL subjects a spokesman from their own circuit — a red strip with Klein's photo where the blue Gehrig strip usually sits.

High number: this card belongs to the fourth and final 24-card press sheet (#73-96), printed as the 1934 season wound down — the reason the set's last two dozen cards are its hardest to find.

About Adam Comorosky

A miner’s son from Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, Adam Comorosky started in the coal breakers at age 12 and later drove mules underground before pro ball took him to Pittsburgh in 1926. Bowlegged from those years astride the mules, he could still fly around the bases — hence his nickname, “The Polish Flier.” He teamed with future Hall of Famers Paul and Lloyd Waner in the Pirates outfield, batting .321 in 1929, then broke out in 1930 with a .316 average, 119 RBI, 47 doubles, and a league-leading 23 triples, a total no National Leaguer has matched since. Pittsburgh traded him to Cincinnati that November with Tony Piet for Red Lucas and Wally Roettger, and Comorosky opened his first season as a Red — the very 1934 campaign pictured on this high-number “Chuck Klein Says” card — by breaking up Lon Warneke’s no-hit bid in Cincinnati’s season opener. He played his last game in 1935 and died in his hometown in 1951.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1934 Goudey Adam Comorosky card?

It is card #85 of the 1934 Goudey (R320) Baseball set - the 96-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1934 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Adam Comorosky with the Cincinnati Reds.

Why does this card say 'Chuck Klein says' instead of 'Lou Gehrig says'?

Cards #80-91 - all National League players - swap the blue Lou Gehrig strip for a red one fronted by the Cubs' Chuck Klein, the reigning NL Triple Crown winner. Goudey used the two spokesmen to balance the leagues. Kiki Cuyler #90 is the only Hall of Famer among the twelve.

Is the 1934 Goudey Adam Comorosky #85 a rookie card?

No. Adam Comorosky is one of the veterans in the set with recognized earlier cards, so this card does not carry the modern rookie-card designation.

How many cards are in the 1934 Goudey set?

96 cards, printed on four 24-card press sheets. 84 fronts carry the blue 'Lou Gehrig says' strip and 12 carry the red 'Chuck Klein says' strip (#80-91). The high numbers #73-96 are the scarcest cards.
