About Paul Derringer
Paul Derringer got his start in 1927 with Danville of the Three-I League, reaching the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1931 and going 18-8 as St. Louis won the World Series, though he lost both of his Series starts. A six-player trade sent the right-hander to Cincinnati on May 7, 1933, and he anchored the Reds’ rotation for a decade. At 6-foot-3½ he was nicknamed “Oom Paul,” while his pinpoint control — the NL’s lowest walk rate in 1939 and 1940 — made him “The Control King.” He started and won the first night game in major-league history on May 24, 1935, won 20 games four times between 1935 and 1940, and went 25-7 in 1939 as Cincinnati captured its first pennant in twenty years. He beat Detroit twice, including a Game Seven complete game, to clinch the 1940 World Series. Derringer finished 223-212 with a 3.46 ERA and 1,507 strikeouts — his 161 Cincinnati wins remain the franchise record for a right-hander — made six All-Star teams, and in 1958 became a charter member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. Card #84, part of the red-banner “Chuck Klein Says” high series (#80–91), is his recognized rookie issue.
