About Dizzy Dean
Jay Hanna Dean picked up his famous nickname in 1929, pitching a service-team exhibition against the Chicago White Sox at Fort Sam Houston; a frustrated Sox manager barked at 'that dizzy kid,' and it stuck for life. Dean joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1930 and returned for good in 1932, a hard-throwing right-hander who topped the National League in strikeouts four straight seasons. Everything peaked in 1934: a 30-7 record, a 2.66 ERA, and the NL MVP award, as Dean powered the famed 'Gashouse Gang' Cardinals to a pennant — the very season captured on this card, whose artwork was recycled from the celebrated 1933 Goudey set for the new issue's opening sheet. He and brother Paul 'Daffy' Dean combined for 49 wins that year, and Dizzy closed out the World Series himself with a complete-game shutout over Detroit. He remains the last National League pitcher to win 30 games. A broken toe in the 1937 All-Star Game wrecked his mechanics and his once-blazing fastball, but Dean reinvented himself as a popular, grammar-mangling broadcaster. He finished 150-83 with 1,163 strikeouts and entered the Hall of Fame in 1953.
