About Tex Carleton
James Otto Carleton grew up on a Texas ranch and played three sports at TCU before turning pro with the Texarkana Twins of the Class D East Texas League in 1925. After stops in Austin, Houston, Rochester, and Syracuse, the tough, no-nonsense side-armer joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1932. Sportswriter Ernest J. Lanigan hung the nickname "Tex" on him in 1931 for his Texas roots. His card #48 in the 1934 Goudey set — his recognized rookie — catches him at his peak, a key right-hander on the pennant-winning "Gas House Gang" that beat Detroit in that year's World Series. He matched zeroes with Carl Hubbell for 16 innings in an epic 18-inning marathon on July 2, 1933, then helped the Chicago Cubs to two more National League pennants, in 1935 and 1938. Carleton closed his career firing a no-hitter for Brooklyn against Cincinnati on April 30, 1940, finishing with 100 wins, 76 losses, a 3.91 ERA, and three pennant flags in a hard-nosed nine-year run.
