1934 Goudey #49 Sam Leslie

About Sam Leslie
Sam Leslie turned pro with the Memphis Chicks in 1927 and led his league with a .376 average in 1929, earning a late-season call-up to the New York Giants that October. Used early as a pinch-hitting specialist — his 22 pinch hits in 1932 remain a Giants franchise record — he was traded to Brooklyn in 1933. Card #49 pictures him with the Dodgers for 1934, when he batted .332 with 181 hits and 102 RBIs and belted a rare inside-the-park grand slam on July 6 — the season captured on what is his rookie card by catalog convention. Returned to the Giants in 1936, Leslie authored the finest day of his career that May 24, going 5-for-5 with a cycle in a 13-5 rout of the Phillies, then helped New York capture back-to-back National League pennants in 1936 and 1937, appearing in the 1936 World Series against the Yankees. He finished a ten-year career hitting .304 and was later inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
