About John Frederick
John Henry Frederick moved from Denver to Portland, Oregon, as a boy, broke into semipro ball in 1920, and turned pro the next year. Brooklyn brought the left-handed hitting outfielder to the majors in 1929 at age 27, and he arrived in style: a .328 average, 206 hits, and 52 doubles that led the major leagues — still the all-time rookie doubles record. He also set a Dodgers rookie mark with three leadoff home runs that season, matched only by Joc Pederson in 2015, and in 1932 he blasted six pinch-hit home runs, a major-league record that stood for 68 years. Over six seasons in Brooklyn he hit .308 with 954 hits, 85 homers and 377 RBI. Fittingly, this card — issued in what proved to be his final big-league season — is his rookie card. Dealt to Sacramento that December, Frederick maintained he’d been “eased out of the league” rather than finished, and he proved it for years afterward, finishing his career with 3,421 hits across the majors and Pacific Coast League. He later managed Portland and entered the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame in 2005.
