1934 Goudey #24 Ray Benge
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.
About Ray Benge
Raymond Adelphia Benge turned pro out of Sam Houston Normal Institute, pitching for a Gulf Oil Corporation team in Tampico, Mexico; the Houston Buffaloes signed him, and Cleveland acquired him in 1925. The right-hander worked twelve big-league seasons — Cleveland, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Boston Bees, and the Cincinnati Reds — mostly for second-division clubs; Casey Stengel said he "never has had a break," and Paul Waner called him one of the two toughest pitchers he ever faced. A Texas League sportswriter tagged him "Silent Cal" for his reticence with reporters. His 1934 season with Brooklyn, the club pictured on this card, was his best: 14-12 with a 4.32 ERA over 227 innings, part of a 101-win career spanning 1,875⅓ innings. Benge later returned to Sam Houston State, coaching the Bearkats to the 1963 NAIA title and 1964 NAIA Coach of the Year honors. A returning subject from 1933, he reappears here as part of this sheet's reused Goudey artwork.
