About Walter Beck

Walter William Beck got his start as a right-hander, debuting with the St. Louis Browns in 1924 and returning to the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1933, when his 35 starts tied for the National League lead. Card #50 in the 1934 Goudey set — his recognized rookie card — pictures him in a Dodgers uniform under new manager Casey Stengel, the very season that turned him into one of the game's great characters, for reasons that had nothing to do with pitching. Pulled from a game at Philadelphia's tin-walled Baker Bowl, an infuriated Beck fired the ball into the outfield fence; the crash was loud enough that Brooklyn outfielder Hack Wilson, half-asleep in right, took off chasing it as though it were in play. The nickname "Boom-Boom" was born and never left him. Beck pitched twelve big-league seasons in all, finishing 38-69 with a 4.30 ERA over 265 games, then coached pitchers for the Washington Senators and Milwaukee Braves.
