About Charlie Gehringer
Charlie Gehringer joined the Detroit Tigers in 1924 and never played for anyone else, holding down second base for all 19 of his big-league seasons through 1942. Cool, quiet, and mechanically consistent at the plate, he earned the nickname "The Mechanical Man" after Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez cracked that you could wind him up in the spring and turn him off in the fall, and in between he'd hit .340. This 1934 Goudey card — one of the set's returning 1933 stars, reprised on Goudey's sheet one and printed with his first name misspelled "Charley" — catches Gehringer in the middle of a monster season: 214 hits and a league-leading 134 runs carried Detroit to its first American League pennant in 25 years. He topped it in 1935, batting .375 to help beat the Cubs in the World Series, then claimed the American League MVP award and batting title at .371 in 1937. A six-time All-Star who started every game at the position from 1933 to 1938, Gehringer retired with a .320 career average, 2,839 hits, and 184 home runs, and the Baseball Writers elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1949.
