About Gee Walker

Gerald "Gee" Walker debuted with Detroit on Opening Day 1931 but didn't stick until a mid-August recall from Toronto, when he tripled in his first at-bat and stole home the day his wife gave birth to their son. He became a fixture in the Tigers outfield, briefly taking the American League batting lead from Jimmie Foxx in 1932, hitting .353 in 1936, and peaking in 1937 with career-highs of .335, 18 home runs and 113 RBIs — a season that opened with an Opening Day cycle in reverse order, a feat no other player has matched, and earned him his only All-Star selection. Walker helped Detroit to the pennant in 1934 and 1935, tying Game Two of the '34 Series with a pinch-hit single and scoring in the Game Six win that clinched the '35 title over the Cubs. His reckless baserunning — once picked off twice in the same inning — earned him the nickname "The Madman from Mississippi," and later moved manager Mickey Cochrane to call taming Walker's talent his "greatest failure." Card #26 in the 1934 Goudey set is recognized today as his rookie card. He retired in 1945 with a .294 average and 1,991 hits over 15 seasons.
