About Doc Cramer
Roger Maxwell "Doc" Cramer was playing semipro ball in Manahawkin, New Jersey, when Athletics catcher Cy Perkins discovered him in 1928. Signed by Connie Mack, he won the 1929 Blue Ridge League batting title at .404 and reached Philadelphia that September. He had carried the nickname "Doc" since boyhood, earned tagging along on house calls with a physician friend, Joshua Hilliard; a sportswriter later tried "Flit," after the bug spray, for his knack of running down fly balls. A contact-hitting center fielder, Cramer anchored the Athletics' outfield and, in the 1934 season pictured on this rookie card, hit for the cycle against the Yankees on June 10. He went on to play for the Red Sox, Senators, and Tigers across twenty big-league seasons, making five All-Star teams (1935, 1937-1940) and leading the American League in at-bats a record seven times. In 1935 he became the only AL player to go 6-for-6 in a nine-inning game twice. Cramer retired with 2,705 hits after batting .379 to help Detroit win the 1945 World Series. Never elected to the Hall of Fame, he still holds the record for most career hits by any player retired before 1975 and passed over by Cooperstown.
