1934 Goudey #28 Ed Coleman

About Ed Coleman
Oregon-born outfielder Ed Coleman entered pro ball in 1926 with the Logan Collegians of the Utah-Idaho League, then rose through the Pacific Coast League with the San Francisco Seals and Portland Beavers before Connie Mack packaged six A's players off to Portland to land him in Philadelphia. Coleman debuted April 15, 1932, and held down right field there through 1934, the season pictured on his Goudey rookie card, #28 in the set. His ninth-inning pinch-hit homer on July 24, 1933, helped the A's tie a franchise record of three home runs in one inning, and on August 17, 1934, he supplied three of his own in a 9-8 win over the White Sox. Traded to the St. Louis Browns in 1935, Coleman set an American League record with 20 pinch-hits in 1936, a mark that stood for three decades, and drew praise from Rogers Hornsby for his raw power. He finished with a .285 average, 40 home runs and 246 RBIs across five big-league seasons.
