About Johnny Marcum

John Alfred "Johnny" Marcum was born September 9, 1909, on a farm near Campbellsburg, Kentucky. Louisville Colonels manager Cap Neal signed him after spotting him pitching for a tobacco-plant team in nearby Eminence, and a 20-13 season for Louisville in 1933 earned him a September call-up to Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, where he debuted with back-to-back five-hit shutouts. In 1934, the season pictured on his rookie card, #69 in the Goudey set, Marcum went 14-11 for the A's despite an 0-6 start, then broke out in 1935 at 17-12, the only Philadelphia pitcher to top nine wins, drawing MVP votes. A right-hander who batted left and hit well enough to pinch-hit for Mack, he was traded to Boston with Jimmie Foxx that December in a $150,000 deal, then closed his seven-year career with the Browns and White Sox in 1939, a season in which a Hank Greenberg line drive knocked him out cold. Nicknamed "Footsie" for the biggest feet in baseball, Marcum finished 65-63 with a 4.66 ERA before returning to run the family farm in Eminence.
