About Leo Durocher
Leo Durocher opened his pro career in 1925 with Hartford of the Eastern League and made the majors with the New York Yankees, becoming their regular shortstop by 1928. A slick glove with a light bat, he moved to the Cincinnati Reds in 1930 and was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1933, serving as team captain of the brawling 1934 "Gashouse Gang" that beat Detroit in a seven-game World Series — the club shown on this card, which reused the same portrait Goudey had printed of him in its 1933 set. He earned three All-Star selections (1936, 1938, 1940) before finishing his playing days with Brooklyn. His combative style earned him the nickname "Leo the Lip," traced to advice from boyhood idol Rabbit Maranville never to back down. That same fire fueled the Hall of Fame managing career that followed: three National League pennants with Brooklyn (1941) and the Giants (1951, 1954), a 1954 World Series sweep of Cleveland, and 2,008 career wins. He also stood behind Jackie Robinson's arrival in Brooklyn, telling his club that talent alone would decide who played. Durocher was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, three years after his death.
