About Lyle Tinning
Lyle Forrest "Bud" Tinning signed his first pro contract with Omaha of the Western League in 1925 and needed six years of minor-league seasoning before his breakout: a 24-2 record and 3.14 ERA for Des Moines in 1931 that persuaded Chicago Cubs scout Jack Doyle to sign him. Tinning made the Cubs' staff in 1932 and delivered immediately, throwing three scoreless innings of relief against the Yankees in that year's World Series and striking out Babe Ruth along the way. His finest season came in 1933, when he went 13-6 with a 3.18 ERA and led the National League in winning percentage. Card #71 in the 1934 Goudey set catches him in his final year as a Cub — his recognized rookie card, issued two full seasons into his big-league career — before a November trade sent him to St. Louis. Tinning made four appearances for the 1935 Cardinals, finished his career at 22-15 with a 3.19 ERA over 99 games, then pitched in the minors through 1939.
