About Dick Porter
Richard Twilley Porter was a hard-hitting third baseman for the Princess Anne town team when a scout for Jack Dunn signed him to the Baltimore Orioles in 1921, launching eight International League seasons that included batting titles at .363 (1924) and .376 (1927) and a place in the International League Hall of Fame. Cleveland's right fielder from 1929 into 1934, Porter hit .350 with 43 doubles in 1930 and set career highs of 191 hits and 106 runs in 1932, all delivered from a crouching, wiggling stance he called his "double-hitch" — the quirk that stuck him with the nicknames "Twitches" and "Wiggles" (when the Hall of Fame later asked his nickname, he simply answered "Dick"). Cubs manager Joe McCarthy predicted he'd rival Babe Ruth as a gate attraction. This 1934 Goudey #43 rookie card catches Porter in Cleveland flannels; that May 25 he and Wes Ferrell were traded to Boston for Bob Seeds, Bob Weiland, and $25,000, closing a .308 career average over 675 games. He later managed in the minors and was inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
