1934 Goudey #14 Willie Kamm
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.
About Willie Kamm
William "Willie" Kamm began his pro career with Sacramento and the San Francisco Seals before the Chicago White Sox paid a record $100,000 for him in 1923 — the first time any club had spent six figures on a player straight from the minors. He debuted at third base and became the era's best defensive third baseman, leading the American League in fielding percentage eight times, six years in a row. His mastery of the hidden-ball trick — showcased in a spectacular April 1929 triple play — earned him the press nickname "Kamm-ouflage." Traded to Cleveland in mid-1931, Kamm was still the Indians' regular third baseman in 1934, the season on this card (reissued from his 1933 Goudey artwork), and when manager Walter Johnson fell ill with pleurisy that year, Kamm stepped in to run the club himself. Twice he drove in 60-plus runs without a home run, a feat no one else has matched. He retired in 1935 with a .281 average and 827 RBIs over 13 big-league seasons.
