1934 Goudey #67 Bob Weiland

About Bob Weiland
Robert George "Lefty" Weiland turned pro with Moline of the Mississippi Valley League in 1927, then punched his ticket to the majors with a breakout 20-10, 210-strikeout season in 1928 that caught the eye of the Chicago White Sox. He debuted that September by shutting out the Philadelphia Athletics 1-0. The tall left-hander — 6-foot-4 and earning his nickname during teenage games at Chicago's Humboldt Park — pitched for the White Sox, Red Sox, Indians, Browns and Cardinals across a 12-year career, finishing 62-94 with a 4.24 ERA and 614 strikeouts. His best years came late, going 15-14 and 16-11 for St. Louis teams sturdy enough to back him up; off the mound, he played jug in Pepper Martin's Mississippi Mudcats band. Weiland's 1934 Goudey card, #67 in the set, captures him mid-transit: dealt from Boston to Cleveland that May in the blockbuster that brought Wes Ferrell to the Red Sox, and pictured here in Indians garb on what is the card catalogs recognize as his rookie.
