About Hal Trosky
Harold Arthur Trosky was born Harold Arthur Trojovsky in Norway, Iowa, shortening the family name after signing with Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka in 1930. He climbed from the Class D Cedar Rapids Bunnies through Burlington, Quincy, and the Toledo Mud Hens before debuting at first base with the Indians in September 1933. Card #76 catches him fresh off the season that made his name: as a 21-year-old rookie in 1934, he played every inning of all 154 games, batting .330 with 35 home runs and 142 RBIs, second-best in the league — numbers rare enough that this card, issued in Goudey's scarce final high-number series (#73-96) late in the year, is his recognized rookie card. Trosky topped himself in 1936, leading the league with 162 RBIs — a Cleveland record that stood for 63 years — and a franchise-best 405 total bases, while batting .343 with a career-high 42 home runs. Severe migraines curtailed his final seasons before he retired in 1941, having hit .302 with 228 home runs and 1,012 RBIs — production that made him, by many estimations, one of the best players never to make an All-Star team.
