About Fern Flaman
Topps caught Fern Flaman at just the right moment: freshly traded back to Boston after four seasons in Toronto, the Dysart, Saskatchewan native promptly led the NHL with 150 penalty minutes in 1954-55 and earned the first of three Second-Team All-Star nods (1955, 1957, 1958). Signed by the Bruins in 1943, "Fernie" — the short form of his given name, Ferdinand — starred for the EAHL's Boston Olympics before sticking in the NHL for good in 1946-47. He won his lone Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs in 1951, then returned to anchor Boston's blue line as captain from 1955 to 1961. Gordie Howe called him the toughest defenseman he ever skated against; Jean Beliveau confessed he looked over his shoulder whenever Flaman was on the ice. Not a rookie card — Flaman already had nearly a decade of NHL service behind him — but a cornerstone Bruin from Topps' set, and a Hockey Hall of Famer, Class of 1990.
