1954-55 Topps #24 Metro Prystai

About Metro Prystai
Straight off a 71-point junior season with the Moose Jaw Canucks, Yorkton, Saskatchewan's Metro Prystai — born Dmytro to Ukrainian immigrant parents, "Metro" being the name he skated under — broke in with the Chicago Black Hawks as a 20-year-old center in 1947-48. A 29-goal, 51-point breakout in 1949-50 brought his first All-Star Game and a ticket to Detroit, where he became a dependable two-way center on Red Wings clubs that hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1952 and 1954, with further All-Star nods in 1952-53 and 1953-54. Card #24 in 1954-55 Topps catches him mid-plot-twist: Detroit shipped him back to the struggling Hawks early that season, then reclaimed him a year later. Not a rookie card — Prystai was a seven-year veteran by this issue. He left the NHL in 1958 with 151 goals and 330 points, then ran an insurance company in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, where he lived until his death in 2013 at age 85.
