About Larry Wilson
Larry Wilson got his name on the Stanley Cup before his NHL career truly began — a 19-year-old call-up from the Windsor Spitfires program, he played one regular-season game and four playoff games for Detroit's 1950 champions. Buried on the Red Wings' loaded roster, the left-shooting centre from Kincardine, Ontario found his opening in Chicago, posting a career-best 9 goals and 33 assists in 1953-54 and adding 12 goals in 63 games during this card's 1954-55 season. His NHL ledger closed at 152 games and 69 points, but Wilson skated on for another dozen seasons in the AHL — nearly 900 games, most as a Buffalo Bisons mainstay. Hockey was the family trade: older brother Johnny and son Ron both played and coached in the NHL, and Larry returned as Detroit's interim head coach in 1976-77 before his sudden death in 1979 at just 48. Not a rookie card, but a nice mid-decade Black Hawks piece.
