1954-55 Topps #21 Jerry Toppazzini

About Jerry Toppazzini
Jerry Toppazzini led the Barrie Flyers with 40 goals and 90 points in 1951-52, powering their first Memorial Cup title before debuting with Boston that fall — so this lone Black Hawks card is not his rookie. Dealt to Chicago for Gus Bodnar, the right wing played his only full Hawks season in 1954-55, first of his three All-Star Game selections, then went to Detroit in an eight-player swap, then the largest trade in NHL history. Reacquired by Boston in 1956, he became hockey's premier penalty killer, setting a then-NHL record for shorthanded goals in 1957-58 while scoring a career-high 25 goals, then adding nine in the playoffs to carry the Bruins to the 1958 Stanley Cup Finals. On October 16, 1960, he relieved injured goalie Don Simmons for a game's final 30 seconds — still the last skater to play goal in an NHL game. He retired with 407 points in 784 games; in 2023 the Bruins named him one of their 100 most historic players.
