About Wally Hergesheimer
One of the Original Six era's most improbable snipers, Wally Hergesheimer scored 114 NHL goals despite losing the index and middle fingers of his right hand in a 1944 industrial accident. The 5-foot-8 Winnipeg winger climbed through Minneapolis, San Francisco and Cleveland — where he won the AHL's Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as 1950-51 rookie of the year — then jumped straight to Broadway. "Hergie," as scoresheets shortened his tongue-twister of a surname, poured in 26, 30 and 27 goals in his first three Rangers seasons, finished second in 1952-53 Lady Byng voting and skated in the 1953 and 1956 NHL All-Star Games. This isn't a rookie card — he'd been a Ranger since 1951-52 — and it caught a low ebb: just 14 games in 1954-55. A season in Chicago and a final Rangers cameo closed his NHL book at 351 games; the New York Times remembered him as "a small big scorer for the Rangers," and 2009's 100 Ranger Greats ranked him No. 92 all-time.
