1954-55 Topps #14 Jack Evans

About Jack Evans
Born in Morriston, Wales and raised in Drumheller, Alberta, William John Trevor Evans spoke only Welsh until grade school — and the slow drawl that clung to his English earned him the nickname "Tex" from teammates who mistook it for a Southern accent. He didn't take up hockey until 14, yet reached the 1948 Memorial Cup with Lethbridge and signed with the Rangers that same year. This card catches a turning point: 1954-55 was the season the rugged defenseman finally cracked New York's regular lineup after years as the club's seventh blueliner — though it's not his rookie card. Claimed by Chicago in 1958, he piled up 990 penalty minutes against just 19 goals over 754 NHL games, won the 1961 Stanley Cup as the first Welsh-born champion, and skated in the 1962 All-Star Game — the first NHL All-Star from Wales. "The Quiet Man" later coached the Hartford Whalers to a 1987 division title.
