1954-55 Topps #53 Don Raleigh

About Don Raleigh
Don "Bones" Raleigh — so nicknamed for the mere 150 pounds he carried on his 5-foot-11 frame — jumped from Winnipeg junior hockey to Broadway, debuting for the New York Rangers in 1943-44 as a 17-year-old. The slick playmaking centre played all 535 of his NHL games in Rangers blue through 1955-56, totaling 101 goals and 320 points, becoming the first Ranger to score four goals in a single game (February 25, 1948, against Chicago), and skating in the 1951 and 1954 All-Star Games. His legend rests on the 1950 Stanley Cup Finals: overtime winners in Games 4 and 5 against Detroit — the first back-to-back OT goals in Finals history — before the Wings took Game 7 in double overtime. Raleigh wore the captain's C from 1953 to 1955, exactly when this card arrived in packs. Not a rookie card, but a prime-years portrait of a Manitoba Sports Hall of Famer (1998).
