1954-55 Topps #11 Andy Bathgate

About Andy Bathgate
Bathgate turned down U.S. college hockey scholarships to join the Guelph Biltmores in 1949, then played his entire career with a steel plate in his left knee from a junior-hockey injury. This card catches him at the perfect moment: after brief Rangers call-ups in 1952-53 and 1953-54 — so it's not a rookie card — 1954-55 was the year he stuck on Broadway for good, opening a decade as New York's marquee attraction. The smooth-skating right wing won the 1958-59 Hart Trophy on a 40-goal, 88-point season, earned four postseason All-Star selections, and tied Bobby Hull at 84 points in 1961-62, losing the Art Ross only on goals. His November 1959 shot bloodied Jacques Plante — the game Plante returned to wearing the mask that changed goaltending forever. Dealt to Toronto midway through 1963-64, he won the Stanley Cup that spring, later scored the first goal in Pittsburgh Penguins history, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
