1954-55 Topps #41 Allan Stanley

About Allan Stanley
Timmins, Ontario's Allan Stanley apprenticed with the Boston Olympics and the AHL's Providence Reds before the Rangers paid a reported $70,000 for him in 1948 — a price Garden fans never let him forget, jeering the deliberate defenseman while the nickname "Snowshoes" got hung on him for his slow, plodding skating style. The criticism aged poorly. Across 21 NHL seasons from 1948-49 to 1968-69, the stay-at-home blueliner logged 1,244 games and 433 points for New York, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and Philadelphia, earning Second Team All-Star honors in 1960, 1961 and 1966 and anchoring Toronto's four Stanley Cup champions of 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967 as a Leafs alternate captain. No rookie card here — Stanley had been a Ranger since 1948-49 — and the timing tells its own story: Topps pictures him in New York colors during the very season the Blueshirts finally dealt him to Chicago. The Hockey Hall of Fame called in 1981.
