1954-55 Topps #56 Edgar Laprade

About Edgar Laprade
Edgar “Beaver” Laprade — the nickname a nod to his industrious style in an era of enforcers called Wild Bill and Terrible Ted — spent all ten NHL seasons (1945–55) at center for the New York Rangers. A Port Arthur, Ontario product who starred for the 1939 Allan Cup-champion Bearcats and served in the army before turning pro at 26, he won the 1945–46 Calder Trophy, skated in four straight All-Star Games (1947–50), and took the 1949–50 Lady Byng after a single minor penalty all season — three of his ten campaigns ended with zero penalty minutes. That spring brought his closest brush with a Stanley Cup, a Game 7 overtime loss to Detroit on Pete Babando's goal in the 1950 Final. Card #56 isn't his rookie — it's the opposite bookend, issued during his farewell 1954–55 season, the last card of his playing days. The Hockey Hall of Fame called in 1993.
