About Bill Dineen
Card 57 is a second-year issue, not a rookie — Topps caught Bill Dineen fresh off back-to-back Stanley Cups. Out of Arvida, Quebec via Toronto's St. Michael's Majors, the right winger broke in with Detroit in 1953-54, scored 17 goals on a Red Wings juggernaut that won the 1954 Cup, then repeated in 1955. He played five NHL seasons for Detroit and Chicago (1953-58), 51 goals in 323 games, before a minor-league run that stretched clear to 1971. Teammates called him 'Foxy' — by his own account, for slipping around checkers on the ice and past curfews off it without ever getting caught. His second act was bigger: coaching the WHA's Houston Aeros to two Avco World Trophies after drafting teenage Mark Howe and luring 45-year-old Gordie Howe out of retirement — his 318 wins are still the most in WHA history. Three sons — Gord, Peter, and Kevin — reached the NHL, and Bill later coached Kevin on the Flyers.
