About Terry Sawchuk
Card #58 catches Terry Sawchuk mid-dynasty, in the middle of the greatest goaltending run the NHL had yet seen. Signed by Detroit as a Winnipeg teenager and named rookie of the year in two minor leagues, he seized the Red Wings' crease in 1950-51, won the Calder Trophy, and made an NHL All-Star Team in each of his first five full seasons. In the 1952 playoffs he allowed five goals in eight games — four of them shutouts — as Detroit swept to the Cup, the same spring the first octopus hit the ice. The season on this card he won 40 games with 12 shutouts and a third Vezina Trophy, backstopping Detroit's third Stanley Cup in four years. Teammates called him "Ukey" for his Ukrainian roots. Later came Boston, Toronto — a fourth Vezina and the 1967 Cup — Los Angeles and New York, plus a then-record 103 career shutouts. Not a rookie card, but this is prime Sawchuk; the Hall waived its waiting period to induct him in 1971.
