1954-55 Topps #27 Marcel Pronovost

About Marcel Pronovost
Marcel Pronovost broke in the hard way: called up for the 1950 playoffs when Gordie Howe went down, he won a Stanley Cup before ever playing a regular-season NHL game. The Shawinigan-raised defenseman anchored Detroit's blue line for 15 seasons, adding Cups in 1952 — when he was the only Red Wing willing to scoop up the first octopus ever thrown onto the ice — 1954, and 1955, then grabbed a fifth with Toronto's 'Over the Hill Gang' in 1967. A four-time postseason All-Star (First Team in 1959-60 and 1960-61), he skated in 11 All-Star Games across 1,206 NHL contests. This card catches him at his offensive peak — his 34 points in 1954-55 stood as a career best. It's not his rookie card, but it's a cornerstone Red Wings piece of the set. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978, Pronovost later scouted three more Cup winners for New Jersey; the 53-year span between his first and last championship remains a Stanley Cup record.
