About Tony Leswick

Every great Red Wings dynasty needs its pest, and Detroit's was a 5-foot-7 buzzsaw from Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Tony Leswick came up through Saskatoon junior hockey and the wartime AHL before breaking in with the New York Rangers in 1945-46, where he potted 27 goals in 1946-47, made the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1950, and skated in six All-Star Games. Dealt to Detroit for Gaye Stewart in June 1951, the winger — listed at right wing on this card, though most references call him a left winger — joined a checking line with Marty Pavelich and Glen Skov and shadowed stars like Rocket Richard -- 900 career penalty minutes on a 160-pound frame earned him the nickname "Mighty Mouse." He won three Stanley Cups (1952, 1954, 1955), and his flip shot that glanced off Doug Harvey's glove in overtime of Game 7 of the 1954 Final remains one of hockey's most famous Cup-winners. A ten-year veteran by this set, card #45 is no rookie card, but it catches Leswick at his championship peak.
