1954-55 Topps #39 Alex Delvecchio
Alex Delvecchio, Detroit’s smooth young center and a future Hall of Famer.

About Alex Delvecchio
Fort William, Ontario's Alex Delvecchio led the OHA in assists with Oshawa in 1950-51, debuted for Detroit that March, and never wore another NHL sweater — 24 seasons, 1951 to 1973, all in the winged wheel. The smooth centre (who also handled left wing) inherited Sid Abel's spot between Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay on the famed Production Line, helped raise Stanley Cups in 1952, 1954 and 1955, and captained the Wings for a dozen seasons on his way to 1,281 points. Teammates called him "Fats" — a childhood tag for his round face and chubby cheeks, not his trim six-foot frame. A three-time Lady Byng winner (1959, 1966, 1969) and 13-time All-Star Game selection, he entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and made the NHL's 100 Greatest list in 2017. This '54-55 Topps card isn't his rookie, but it catches him fresh off the 1954 Cup, with a seven-goal, 15-point playoff run coming that spring.
