1954-55 Topps #52 Dutch Reibel

About Dutch Reibel
A Kitchener, Ontario product who starred for the junior Windsor Spitfires and apprenticed in Omaha, Indianapolis, and Edmonton, Earl "Dutch" Reibel hit Detroit for 1953-54 and made instant history: his four assists in his NHL debut still stand as the record for a first game. The slick centre finished runner-up for the Calder, then helped power the Red Wings to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1954 and 1955. His 66-point 1954-55 season made him the only player to dethrone Gordie Howe as Detroit's scoring leader between 1950 and 1964 — by four points — and he scored twice, including the winner, in the October 1955 All-Star Game. A famously clean operator, he claimed the 1956 Lady Byng Trophy on just 10 penalty minutes. Later stops in Chicago and Boston rounded out a 409-game, 245-point NHL career. Card #52 isn't his rookie, but it catches the quiet playmaker at the very top of his game.
