About Ted Lindsay
By the time Topps slotted him at No. 51 in 1954-55, Ted Lindsay was a decade into his NHL career — no rookie card here, just prime "Terrible Ted." Son of pro goaltender Bert Lindsay, he starred at Toronto's St. Michael's, won the 1944 Memorial Cup with Oshawa, and debuted for Detroit that fall at 19. The 5-foot-8 left wing drove the Production Line with Sid Abel and Gordie Howe, his ferocious play earning the "Terrible Ted" nickname as he piled up 851 points and 1,808 penalty minutes over 1,068 games with the Red Wings (1944-57, 1964-65) and Black Hawks (1957-60). He won the 1949-50 Art Ross Trophy, earned nine All-Star selections, and claimed four Stanley Cups between 1950 and 1955 — and was first to hoist the Cup and skate it around the rink. Organizing the NHL's first players' association got him traded to Chicago in 1957; the Hall of Fame called in 1966, though he skipped the all-male induction banquet — it admitted women the next year.
