1954-55 Topps #9 Benny Woit

About Benny Woit
Benny Woit was the stay-at-home muscle behind one of hockey's great dynasties. The Fort William, Ontario product won a Memorial Cup with the 1947 St. Michael's Majors, helped his hometown Port Arthur Bruins claim another in 1948, then apprenticed three seasons with the AHL's Indianapolis Capitals before Detroit called him up in 1950-51. A right-shot defensive specialist alongside Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, and Terry Sawchuk, he was a regular on Red Wings Stanley Cup winners in 1952, 1954, and 1955 — all at Montreal's expense — and skated in the 1954 NHL All-Star Game. "I just happened to be with the right guys, I guess," he later said. Card #9 isn't a rookie, and it captures Woit in what proved to be his final Detroit season; traded to Chicago that summer, he finished with 334 NHL games and 33 points, then had a long minor-league ride including player and coach duty with the EHL's Clinton Comets before returning home to work as a longshoreman in Thunder Bay.
