About Gump Worsley
The Gumper's story is pure hobby gold. Montreal-born Lorne Worsley — dubbed "Gump" because boyhood friends thought he resembled comic-strip character Andy Gump — spent years starring for minor-league clubs like the New York Rovers and Saskatoon Quakers before winning the 1952-53 Calder Trophy as a Rangers rookie on a last-place team. He asked for a $500 raise and got demoted for it, then returned in 1954-55 to replace Johnny Bower — right where card #10 catches him, already past rookie-card status. The goaltender battled through ten seasons behind thin Rangers squads until a 1963 trade to the Canadiens changed everything: four Stanley Cups (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969), Vezina Trophies in 1966 and 1968, and a 29-7 playoff record in Montreal. He closed out with the Minnesota North Stars through 1973-74, going maskless until his final six games — "My face is my mask," he shrugged. Hockey Hall of Fame, Class of 1980.
