1954-55 Topps #3 Harry Howell

About Harry Howell
Harry Howell was already a Madison Square Garden fixture when Topps slotted him at card #3 in 1954-55 — fitting, since No. 3 was the sweater he wore for seventeen Rangers seasons, a number the club retired to the rafters in 2009. Not a rookie card: the Hamilton, Ontario native had broken in back in 1952-53 after winning the 1952 Memorial Cup with the Guelph Biltmores. Nicknamed "Harry the Horse" for his strength and iron-man dependability — he missed just 17 games across his first 16 seasons — the smooth, stay-at-home defenseman set a franchise-record 1,160 games as a Ranger and 1,411 in all across 21 NHL years with New York, Oakland/California, and Los Angeles, plus three WHA seasons through 1976. A seven-time All-Star, he won the 1966-67 Norris Trophy, the last of the Original Six era, then quipped that Bobby Orr would "own this trophy from now on." Orr won the next eight. The Hall called in 1979.
