About Al Rollins
A lanky Saskatchewan goaltender who came up through Moose Jaw junior hockey and backstopped the Edmonton Flyers to the 1948 Allan Cup, Al Rollins reached Toronto in 1949-50 and quickly made history: his league-best 1.77 goals-against average earned the 1950-51 Vezina Trophy while the Maple Leafs captured the Stanley Cup. Dealt to Chicago for Harry Lumley, he spent five seasons (1952-53 to 1956-57) absorbing rubber behind the Original Six's weakest lineup — and in 1953-54 authored one of the great upsets in awards history, winning the Hart Trophy as league MVP despite a 12-47-7 record, out-polling Red Kelly and Maurice Richard. He suited up for the 1954 All-Star Game and later closed his NHL run with the Rangers in 1959-60. Not a rookie card, this Topps issue catches Rollins fresh off that improbable MVP campaign; remarkably, he remains among the few Hart winners never enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
