About Dick Gamble
The very first card in 1954-55 Topps Hockey catches Dick Gamble mid-detour: the left winger played just 14 games for the Black Hawks that season, and despite the No. 1 slot this isn't his rookie card. Out of Moncton, New Brunswick via the Oshawa Generals and Quebec Aces, Gamble broke in with Montreal, scored 23 goals in 1951-52, earned an All-Star Game nod in 1952-53, and won the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1953. His true legend, though, is minor-league royalty: 468 AHL goals — fourth all-time — with Buffalo and Rochester, three Calder Cups with the Amerks (1965, 1966, 1968), the 1965-66 scoring title and Les Cunningham MVP, a retired No. 9 in Rochester, and a 2007 AHL Hall of Fame induction. Best bit of lore: Gamble was the model for the tin players on Eagle Toys' classic 1950s table-hockey game — his likeness scored countless basement goals across Canada.
