1954-55 Topps #42 Red Sullivan
About Red Sullivan
Peterborough, Ontario's George "Red" Sullivan — tipped to the Bruins by hometown legend Dit Clapper — broke in with Boston in 1949-50, but it was Chicago's 1954 purchase of the slick centre, fresh off a 119-point AHL season in Hershey, that made him a star. He led the Black Hawks in scoring in both his seasons there, posting 19 goals and 61 points in 1954-55 and earning the first of five All-Star Game nods (1955, 1956, 1958-60). Dealt to the Rangers in 1956, he survived a Doug Harvey spear that ruptured his spleen — a priest delivered last rites at his hospital bed — then returned to captain New York from 1957-58 through 1960-61, finishing with 346 points in 557 games before coaching the Rangers, the expansion Penguins, and the Capitals. Not a rookie card — this one catches the flame-haired pivot at his Black Hawks peak.
