About Doug Mohns

Doug “Diesel” Mohns picked up his nickname with the junior Barrie Flyers — a fitting tag for a railroader’s son from Capreol, Ontario, who said that when he couldn’t get around a defender, he went over him like a diesel train. Fresh off Memorial Cup wins with Barrie in 1951 and 1953, he jumped straight to the Boston Bruins at 19 and never played a minor-league game across 22 NHL seasons, 1953-54 through 1974-75. This 1954-55 Topps #18 is his rookie card — Parkhurst never issued him in 1951-54, though he also appears in the same season’s 1954-55 Parkhurst set at #57. An early slap-shot artist and one of the first NHL players to wear a helmet, Mohns spent 11 years in Boston before joining Chicago’s famed Scooter Line at left wing beside Stan Mikita and Kenny Wharram. A seven-time All-Star who shifted between wing and defense with rare ease, he finished with 248 goals and 710 points, captaining the expansion Washington Capitals in his final season.
