About Jim Henry
"Sugar Jim" Henry — the nickname stuck after neighbours in Winnipeg dipped his baby pacifier in sugar — arrived in the NHL off a 1941 Allan Cup run with the Regina Rangers and promptly led all goaltenders with 29 wins as a New York Rangers rookie in 1941-42. Three years of wartime army hockey (and a second Allan Cup with the 1943 Ottawa Commandos) interrupted his career before stops with the Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks. Sold to Boston in 1951, he became the Bruins' iron-man netminder, playing every minute of three straight 70-game seasons with seven or eight shutouts apiece and earning Second-Team All-Star and All-Star Game honors in 1952 — the spring a black-eyed Henry shook hands with a bloodied Maurice Richard in one of hockey's most famous photographs. Card #37 caught the 34-year-old in his final NHL campaign, so it's no rookie card; he retired with 405 games, 28 shutouts, and a 2.84 average.
