About Cal Gardner
No rookie card here — Cal Gardner was nearly a decade into his NHL career when Topps pictured him in Bruins colors. The Transcona, Manitoba centre won a Memorial Cup with the 1943 Winnipeg Rangers, served in the Second World War, then broke in with the New York Rangers on February 10, 1946, centring an all-Manitoba line promoted intact from the Rovers. Dealt to Toronto in 1948 to fill retiring captain Syl Apps' spot, he delivered Stanley Cups in 1949 — scoring the Cup-winning goal — and 1951, with All-Star Game appearances in 1948 and 1949. His bitter feud with Montreal's Ken Reardon — a 1947 Madison Square Garden brawl, a broken jaw in 1949, and Clarence Campbell's famous $1,000 peace bond — is pure Original Six lore. Gardner skated all 70 games for Boston in 1954-55, scoring 16 goals, and finished with 392 points in 696 NHL games; sons Dave and Paul followed him into pro hockey.
