1954-55 Topps #48 Ed Sandford

About Ed Sandford
A star with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Ed Sandford led the OHA with 67 points in 1946-47, claimed the Red Tilson Trophy as its MVP, and powered St. Mike's to the 1947 Memorial Cup before signing with Boston that year. The rangy left wing anchored the Bruins for eight seasons, skating in five straight NHL All-Star Games (1951-55) and topping all 1953 playoff scorers with eight goals and eleven points, a run the SIHR later honored with a retroactive Conn Smythe selection. His best year came in 1953-54: 47 points, a top-ten scoring finish, and Second Team All-Star honors. In 1954-55, the season behind this card, he succeeded the retiring Milt Schmidt as Bruins captain. Dealt to Detroit in a then-record nine-player trade in 1955 and soon moved to Chicago, he retired in 1956 with 251 points in 503 games. Not a rookie card, this #48 lands squarely in his captaincy season; Sandford died in 2023 at 95, named to the Bruins' Historic 100 just weeks earlier.
