About Derek Harper
A second-team All-American at Illinois, Derek Harper went 11th overall to Dallas in the 1983 NBA Draft and ran the Mavericks' backcourt for over a decade beside Rolando Blackman, helping push the club to the 1988 Western Conference Finals. Fleer's #30 catches him in full stride — 17.3 points and 7.0 assists per game in 1988-89, midway through a streak of raising his scoring average eight straight seasons, a feat since matched only by JJ Redick and DeAndre Jordan. A two-time All-Defensive Second Team pick (1987, 1990), the point guard never made an All-Star team and is widely called the best player never selected. Dealt to New York, he came within a Game 7 of the 1994 title. Sixteen seasons, 16,006 points, and 6,577 assists later — with late stops in Orlando and with the Lakers — he retired as the Mavericks' career assists and steals leader, and Dallas raised his No. 12 in 2018. Not a rookie card, but prime Harper through and through.
