About Rolando Blackman
Panama City-born and Brooklyn-raised, Rolando Blackman starred at Kansas State — 1980 Big Eight Player of the Year and a starter on the boycotted 1980 U.S. Olympic team — before Dallas drafted him ninth overall in 1981, making him the NBA's first Panamanian-born player. The silky shooting guard anchored the Mavericks for eleven seasons, earning four All-Star selections (1985, 1986, 1987, 1990) and forcing overtime in the 1987 All-Star Game with two clutch free throws. Known simply as "Ro," the shortened form of his first name listed on Basketball-Reference, he never fouled out in 865 games as a Maverick, and his 16,643 Dallas points stood as the franchise record until Dirk Nowitzki broke it in 2008. This is no rookie card — Blackman was a seven-year veteran here, coming off the Mavs' 1988 Western Conference Finals run and headed for a 19.7-point season. He retired with 17,623 points, reached the 1994 Finals with New York, and Dallas retired his No. 22 in 2000.
