1988-89 Fleer #104 Johnny Dawkins

About Johnny Dawkins
Before he wore Spurs silver and black, Johnny Dawkins was the most decorated guard Duke had ever produced — a two-time consensus All-American who left Durham in 1986 with a then-record 2,556 points and the Naismith Player of the Year award after steering the Blue Devils to a 37-3 season and the NCAA final. San Antonio took the left-handed point guard tenth overall in the 1986 draft, and this card — not his rookie — catches him entering his third Spurs campaign, fresh off a 1987-88 line of 15.8 points and 7.4 assists per game. Nicknamed "Pooh" since infancy — an aunt decided the baby looked like a pooh-bear lying in his crib — Dawkins logged nine NBA seasons with the Spurs (1986-89), 76ers (1989-94), and Pistons (1994-95), averaging 11.1 points and 5.5 assists across 541 games. The second act may top the first: longtime Duke assistant under Mike Krzyzewski, head coach at Stanford and UCF, and a Collegiate Basketball Hall of Famer.
