About Kevin Duckworth
A second-round steal out of Eastern Illinois, where he set the school rebounding record with 867 boards, Kevin Duckworth went 33rd overall to San Antonio in 1986 — then was flipped to Portland for Walter Berry before his rookie season was out. The 7-foot center bloomed fast: 1988 Most Improved Player, then career highs of 18.1 points and 8.0 rebounds in 1988-89, the first of two All-Star seasons (1989, 1991). "Sir Duck" — a nickname EIU's press releases were already using in 1986 — manned the pivot for Blazers clubs that reached the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992. Later stops with the Bullets, Bucks, and Clippers closed an 11-year run of 8,085 points (11.8 per game) through 1997. Card #93 in 1988-89 Fleer is his rookie card, landing right at the peak of his Portland years. Duckworth died in 2008 at 44, still serving the Blazers as a Heritage Ambassador.
